About High Point Community Center and Playfield in Seattle

Walt Hundley Playfield Park, located in Seattle, Washington, is an 11-acre recreational space that serves as a vibrant community gathering place. Developed in 1980, the park was acquired by Seattle Parks and Recreation from the Seattle Housing Authority in 1977.

The playfield is named in honor of Walter R. Hundley, the first African-American superintendent for Seattle Parks and Recreation, who held the position from 1977 to 1988. Mr. Hundley played a crucial role in acquiring the High Point site for the community center and playfield, demonstrating his dedication to parks, recreational facilities, green belts, and open spaces.

The park features a variety of sports facilities, including two baseball fields and a lighted turf soccer field, which are primarily used by recreational sports groups. In 2019, the play area located just south of the High Point Community Center underwent renovation, introducing new equipment such as swings, slides, and climbable structures. The updated playground now caters to children aged 2-5 and 5-12, ensuring compliance with current safety standards and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Walt Hundley Playfield Park offers more than just sports facilities. The area includes a picnic area with several tables, providing space for community members to gather and enjoy outdoor meals. The park's landscaping enhances its natural beauty, with extensive plantings surrounding the wading pool and a crushed rock path connecting various sections of the park.

The park's design also incorporates elements that make it accessible and enjoyable for visitors of all ages. Benches and sitting boulders are strategically placed throughout the park, offering plenty of spots for rest, reading, or watching children play. The short, steep west border of the park features a native plant garden, adding to the park's diverse landscape.
