First Hill Park

First Hill Park is a small urban park located in the First Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Opened in 1987, this 0.25-acre green space provides a tranquil retreat in one of the city's densest residential areas. The park sits along University Street and Minor Street, immediately north of the historic Stimson-Green Mansion.

In early 2021, First Hill Park underwent a community-led renovation to enhance its usability and aesthetic appeal. The redesign aimed to create a more open and flexible space while maintaining the intimate garden feel characteristic of the First Hill neighborhood. The updated park features a curvilinear seat step that meanders through the space, framing a small lawn area suitable for events and gatherings.

The park's design incorporates permeable pavers laid in a herringbone pattern, which not only pays homage to the previous brick paving but also serves a practical purpose by treating and percolating stormwater into the ground. Lushly planted beds are interspersed throughout the park, providing greenery and visual interest.

A notable addition to the park following its renovation is a custom bronze sculpture by artist Georgia Gerber. The sculpture, inspired by the history of the neighboring Stimson-Green Mansion, features an Edwardian chair, ottoman, and two bear cubs, adding a whimsical and historically relevant touch to the space.

First Hill Park serves as an important community gathering space in an area with limited open green spaces. It offers residents and workers in the neighborhood a place for relaxation, small events, and passive recreation activities.
