About Heritage Hill State Historical Park in Green Bay
Heritage Hill State Historical Park is a 56-acre open-air museum located in Allouez, Wisconsin, near Green Bay. The park is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of Northeastern Wisconsin from the 1600s to the early 1900s.
The park features 26 historical and reproduction structures, including endangered historic buildings that have been relocated from other areas, as well as some modern reconstructions. These buildings are arranged to represent different periods and aspects of the region's history.
Heritage Hill State Historical Park is divided into four main areas: The Fur Trade, representing the early contact and fur trade industry; The Growing Community, showcasing Green Bay's development as a burgeoning metropolis in the late 19th century; The Belgian Farmstead, depicting immigrant farming communities in the early 20th century; and Fort Howard, a reconstruction of the fort as it would have stood on the west side of Green Bay in the mid-19th century.
The park is open year-round, with most of its programming and historic costumed interpreters available from May to October. During this period, visitors can enjoy guided tours by costumed interpreters in the historic and reproduction buildings, providing an engaging and informative experience. In the winter months, the park remains open for activities such as sledding, snowshoeing, and winter walks.
Heritage Hill State Historical Park houses over 9,000 artifacts in its collection, mostly displayed within the buildings. Some of these artifacts are on loan from local historical societies and include original artwork, books, clothing, and furnishings dating from the 17th century to the present.
The park also features an Education Center, constructed in 2006, which allows for year-round educational programs and hosts about 18,000 students annually. These programs offer students a firsthand look at how their early ancestors lived and worked, meeting benchmarks and standards in history and social studies.
