About Mitchell Park in Milwaukee
Mitchell Park is a historic 61-acre urban park located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Established in 1890, it is one of the oldest parks in the Milwaukee County Parks system. The park sits on a bluff overlooking the Menomonee Valley, offering scenic views of the surrounding area.
The centerpiece of Mitchell Park is the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, more commonly known as "The Domes." Opened in 1959, The Domes consist of three unique glass structures, each 85 feet high and 140 feet in diameter. These iconic domes house distinct plant environments: a tropical jungle, a desert oasis, and a floral showcase that changes with the seasons.
Beyond The Domes, Mitchell Park features a variety of outdoor recreational facilities. The park includes sports fields, basketball courts, and a playground for children. Walking paths wind through the landscaped grounds, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the park.
The park also has historical significance. It was originally developed as a private park by Alexander Mitchell, a prominent Milwaukee businessman, before being acquired by the city. A stone monument in the park marks the site of an early 19th-century fur trading post established by Jacques Vieau, one of Milwaukee's first European settlers.
Mitchell Park serves as a green oasis in the heart of Milwaukee, providing residents and visitors alike with opportunities for recreation, education, and appreciation of nature. Its combination of horticultural displays, outdoor amenities, and historical elements make it a unique and valuable asset to the community.
