About The Barnacle Historic State Park in Miami

The Barnacle Historic State Park is a 5-acre state park located in the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Florida. Established in 1973, the park preserves the oldest house in Miami-Dade County still standing in its original location.

Built in 1891, the main house known as "The Barnacle" was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove's founders and a prominent yacht designer. The house showcases unique architectural features adapted to the South Florida climate, including a raised design for natural ventilation.

The park grounds contain one of the last remaining examples of Miami's original tropical hardwood hammock ecosystem. Visitors can explore this remnant of old Florida through a short nature trail leading from the park entrance to the historic structures.

In addition to The Barnacle, the park includes other historic buildings such as a boathouse rebuilt in 1927 and a carriage house. The shoreline of Biscayne Bay forms the eastern boundary of the property, offering scenic views and a glimpse into the area's maritime history.

The Barnacle Historic State Park offers guided tours of the main house, providing insights into pioneer life in early Miami and the legacy of Commodore Munroe. The park also hosts various events throughout the year, including outdoor concerts, movies, and educational programs.
