About Credit Island Park in Davenport
Credit Island Park is a 450-acre public park and historic location situated on an island in the Mississippi River, on the southwest side of Davenport, Iowa. The park's name originates from its past use as a trading post during the North American fur trade era, where credit could be obtained on the promise of future delivery of hides and skins.
The park holds historical significance as the site of the Battle of Credit Island, one of the westernmost battles of the War of 1812, which took place on September 4-5, 1814. This battle was fought between Sauk Indians with British support and a regiment under the command of Major Zachary Taylor.
Today, Credit Island Park offers a diverse range of recreational opportunities for visitors. The park features a 2.6-mile paved loop, ideal for walking, running, and cycling. It is also a popular spot for fishing, bird watching, and enjoying scenic views of the Mississippi River and downtown Davenport.
The park includes both natural areas and developed recreational facilities. Visitors can explore nature trails, observe local wildlife, or take advantage of the various sports fields and courts. The park is known for its disc golf course, which attracts enthusiasts from the surrounding area.
Credit Island Park is prone to flooding due to its location in the Mississippi River floodplain. As a result, the park may occasionally be closed to the public during high water events or for large-scale community events.
The Credit Island Lodge, a historic building within the park, was restored in 2015 after suffering fire damage in 2013. This lodge is now available for public events and gatherings, adding to the park's amenities and community value.
