About Old Schuetzen Park in Davenport
Schuetzen Park is a privately owned 26-acre nature and recreation area located in the west end of Davenport, Iowa. The park has a rich history dating back to 1870, when it was founded by German-American immigrants as a target shooting range and social gathering place. At its peak in the early 20th century, the park featured an inn, dance hall, roller coaster, zoo, and other amusements that attracted thousands of visitors.
Today, Schuetzen Park is maintained as a natural area with walking trails through wooded terrain. The park aims to preserve its German-American cultural heritage while providing outdoor recreation opportunities for the public. Visitors can explore over a mile of looping trails that wind through the forested landscape.
One of the few remaining original structures is a 1911 streetcar waiting station near the main entrance, which has been restored. The park also contains newer amenities like picnic shelters, a bandstand for concerts, and an outdoor fireplace. Schuetzen Park hosts various cultural events and programs throughout the year to celebrate its history.
The park is open daily from May through November during daylight hours. As a privately owned park, Schuetzen Park relies on community support and volunteers to maintain the grounds and facilities. Visitors are asked to respect the natural environment and historical aspects of this unique Davenport landmark.
