About Sunderbruch Park in Davenport

Sunderbruch Park is a 134-acre natural area located in the west end of Davenport, Iowa. The park, originally purchased by the city in the 1970s, was not developed until the early 2000s. Initially known as Southwest Park, it was renamed in 2006 to honor Dr. John Sunderbruch, a Davenport physician, community leader, and lifelong resident of the west end.

The park is characterized by its diverse landscape, featuring a mix of woodland and prairie areas. It offers visitors a chance to experience some of the most beautiful wooded scenery in Davenport, with rolling hills and ravines adding to its natural appeal. The park's terrain provides an ideal setting for various outdoor activities and nature observation.

Sunderbruch Park is particularly noted for its extensive trail system. The park contains three main types of trails: hiking, off-road biking, and equestrian. A 1.3-mile paved multi-use path runs through the center of the park, suitable for walking, running, and casual cycling. This path traverses both open fields and wooded areas, offering users a varied experience of the park's landscapes.

For mountain biking enthusiasts, Sunderbruch Park is considered a crown jewel of off-road riding in Davenport. The park features approximately seven miles of singletrack mountain biking trails, ranging in difficulty from beginner (green) to expert (black diamond) levels. These trails incorporate various features such as log crossings, wooden structures, creek crossings, and challenging terrain, catering to riders of different skill levels.

Equestrian users are also accommodated at Sunderbruch Park, with about 4.5 miles of dedicated horse-friendly trails. This makes Sunderbruch the only park in Davenport that permits horseback riding, adding to its unique offerings among city parks.

The park is open year-round from sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset, allowing visitors to enjoy its natural beauty across different seasons. While largely undeveloped, Sunderbruch Park provides a valuable green space for outdoor recreation and nature appreciation within the city of Davenport.
