Hermin Hill Park

Herman Hill Park is a serene, wooded park located along the banks of the Arkansas River in South Wichita, Kansas. Established in 1932, the park spans a significant area and features a combination of recreational, educational, and community-focused amenities. It is named after Herman A. Hill, a former Wichita mayor and businessman. The park is particularly notable for its history and ongoing role as a neighborhood gathering space.

One of the park’s highlights is its championship-quality 18-hole disc golf course, which includes defined fairways, concrete tees, and rolling terrain complemented by mature trees. This feature is popular among both casual and competitive disc golfers. Visitors can also enjoy a paved nature trail that winds alongside a creek and eventually connects to the Arkansas River. This trail provides scenic views and opportunities for birdwatching and leisurely walks.

A key attraction within the park is the Wichita Area Treatment, Education & Remediation (WATER) Center. This facility is both a groundwater remediation center and an interactive educational space. It includes exhibits, an aquarium featuring native Arkansas River fish, and various water displays. The park also includes traditional park amenities such as picnic shelters, a playground with a safety surface, and ample parking.

Over the years, Herman Hill Park has evolved into a family-friendly destination, balancing its natural beauty with community-centered features. Despite its dark history tied to the 1979 Herman Hill riot, today it stands as a recreational hub offering activities for all ages.
