About Francis Slay Park in St Louis

Francis R. Slay Park is a 9-acre city park located in the Ellendale neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. The park was established in 1926 and was originally named Ellendale Park. In 2009, it was renamed to honor Francis R. Slay, a former Democratic politician, restaurateur, and father of former St. Louis mayor Francis G. Slay.

The park is situated between the River Des Peres to the east, McCausland Avenue to the west, Arsenal Street to the north, and Canterbury Avenue to the south. It offers a mix of open green spaces and recreational facilities for visitors to enjoy.

Francis R. Slay Park features several sports fields, including soccer fields and softball fields, which are frequently used for local leagues and casual play. A relatively new two-lane walking path provides visitors with an opportunity for exercise and leisurely strolls. The park also boasts a playground and tennis courts, both of which are reported to be in excellent condition.

The northern part of the park, closest to Arsenal Street, consists of mowed grass areas with scattered trees, including some newly planted ones. While the park offers recreational opportunities, accessibility from surrounding neighborhoods can be challenging, as pedestrians must cross six traffic lanes and a median when approaching from the larger Ellendale neighborhood to the west.

The park includes basic amenities such as restrooms and a water fountain, which are operational but not always open. The fencing along the River Des Peres easement side has been reported to be in poor condition, with missing sections in some areas.

Despite some maintenance issues, Francis R. Slay Park serves as a valuable green space for the community, providing a venue for sports, recreation, and outdoor enjoyment in the urban environment of St. Louis.
