About Thornden Park in Syracuse

Thornden Park is a 76-acre public park located in Syracuse, New York. It is the second largest park in the city, following Burnet Park. The park was originally a farm owned by Zebulon Ostrom, which was later sold to James P. Haskins, a wealthy salt miner, around 1850. In 1921, the City of Syracuse purchased the land as part of the nationwide City Beautiful movement.

The park features a diverse landscape with both forested and open spaces, providing visitors with a variety of natural environments to explore. One of its most notable attractions is the E.M. Mills Memorial Rose Garden, dedicated in 1924. The rose garden spans 2 acres and contains 368 different varieties of roses, totaling 3,850 plants, surrounding a central gazebo.

Thornden Park also includes an amphitheater, originally named Sylvn Theatre, which was built in 1933. The amphitheater has a seating capacity of 6,000 people and hosts various performances throughout the year, including an annual free show by the Syracuse Opera and Shakespeare-in-the-Park productions.

The park has become a popular location for weddings within the Syracuse park system, particularly in the rose garden area. Additionally, it serves as a recreational hub for the surrounding community, offering various facilities for sports and leisure activities.

Thornden Park is situated in the Westcott neighborhood and borders the University and University Hill areas, making it easily accessible to students and residents alike. In 1994, the park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Historic Designated Landscapes of Syracuse, New York, recognizing its historical and cultural significance to the city.
