About Westminster Park in Syracuse
Westminster Park is a small urban park located in Syracuse, New York. The 4.784 acre park sits at the end of Westminster Avenue atop a 655-foot drumlin, offering visitors panoramic views of Syracuse and Onondaga Lake. The park's elevated position makes it one of the highest points in the city.
Originally established in 1890, Westminster Park was once a former sheep pasture that was deeded for public use by the original Westminster Tract developers. The park features mature trees that provide shade for visitors, as well as open grassy areas. A loop road surrounds the central green space, allowing for easy access and walking.
One of the park's most notable features is its connection to Euclid Avenue via a historic staircase. These stairs, sometimes referred to as the "Westminster Staircase" or the "Stairway to Heaven," provide a serene departure from the bustle of the University Neighborhood below. The staircase is popular among local residents for exercise and offers a unique urban hiking experience.
Westminster Park serves as a quiet retreat for nearby residents and students. Its modest size and simple layout make it ideal for passive recreation activities such as picnicking, reading, or enjoying the views. The park's secluded nature and elevation have made it a popular spot for contemplation and social gatherings over the years.
