About Green Hills County Park in Raleigh
Green Hills County Park is a unique 36-acre recreational area located in the northern part of Wake County, Raleigh, North Carolina. The park, which opened in July 2010, sits within the footprint of a previously closed municipal solid waste landfill, offering visitors an innovative example of land reclamation and repurposing.
The park's most distinctive feature is the "Big Hill," a 73-acre former landfill that rises over 190 feet above the surrounding landscape. This hill, which contains 4.8 million tons of waste, has been safely capped and transformed into a recreational asset. Visitors can climb to the top of the hill, reaching an elevation of 469 feet above sea level, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Raleigh downtown skyline on clear days.
Green Hills County Park offers nearly 5 miles of trails for visitors to enjoy. These include paved walking paths that connect various park amenities, as well as unpaved hiking and mountain biking trails. The park features a 1.4-mile paved Pedestrian Loop that encircles the big hill, providing a safe route for exercise away from vehicular traffic. For mountain biking enthusiasts, there are 2 miles of trails designed for beginner and intermediate skill levels, along with a dedicated skills area for practicing techniques.
The park provides recreational opportunities for all ages, with a playground that includes areas for both younger (ages 2-5) and older children (ages 5-12). Picnic areas are available throughout the park, including a shelter that can accommodate up to 100 people. However, due to the presence of a landfill gas collection system nearby, open flames, grills, and smoking are prohibited to ensure safety.
Green Hills County Park is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. until sunset, closing only on major holidays. The park's design emphasizes environmental stewardship, with ongoing monitoring of the former landfill site to ensure public safety and environmental protection.
