About Westmoreland City Park in Eugene
Westmoreland Park is a large community park located in southeast Eugene, Oregon. Spanning 62.8 acres, this expansive green space offers a diverse range of recreational opportunities for area residents. The park is situated along Amazon Creek, with the northern end of the park straddling the creek and extending south to West 24th Avenue.
Originally acquired by the City of Eugene in 1936, Westmoreland Park has a rich history. Prior to becoming a park, the land was used for various purposes including farming, a golf course, and even a landing strip known as Broomfield Aviation Field in the early 20th century. Over the years, the park has undergone several transformations to become the multifaceted recreational area it is today.
In recent years, Westmoreland Park has undergone significant renovations to enhance its natural features and recreational amenities. A major restoration project completed in 2014 focused on improving the park's water features. The former duck pond was converted into a wetland area, which has allowed for the return of migrating salmon to the stream. This ecological improvement has created a healthier park environment for both people and native wildlife.
The park boasts an impressive array of sports facilities, including baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, and a 9-hole disc golf course. For those seeking less structured activities, there are plenty of open spaces for informal sports and play. A network of paths and trails, including a looped path and off-street bike/pedestrian paths, provides ample opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling.
Westmoreland Park also features a nature-based playground, added during the 2014 renovation. This unique play area incorporates natural elements such as boulders and logs, encouraging creative and adventurous play for children. The park's design includes several overlooks and a water access ramp, allowing visitors to enjoy views of the restored wetlands and Crystal Springs Creek.
With its combination of natural beauty, recreational facilities, and ecological features, Westmoreland Park serves as a vital community resource for Eugene residents, offering something for nearly every outdoor enthusiast.
