About Pier Park in Portland
Pier Park is an 85-acre municipal park located in the St. Johns neighborhood of North Portland, Oregon. Characterized by its expansive evergreen forest, the park offers a serene natural environment within the urban landscape. The park is bordered by North Columbia Boulevard and provides a significant green space for the local community.
Originally part of the James Loomis donation land claim, Pier Park was established in 1921 when the city of Portland passed an ordinance naming it after Sylvester Charles Pier (1853-1935), a former City Commissioner in charge of parks. The park's development involved transforming a former wetland area, with over 100 men employed from unemployment lists to clear the site and prepare it for public use.
Pier Park is known for its diverse recreational offerings, catering to a wide range of interests and age groups. One of its main attractions is the disc golf course, set among tall trees and considered one of the top courses in the country. The course winds through the park, contributing to its safety by maintaining a regular presence of players throughout the area.
The park also features a concrete skatepark, first developed by the Army Corps of Engineers in 2001 and later redeveloped by Dreamland Skateparks. This 11,070 square foot facility includes both street course elements and transition features, providing a variety of terrain for skateboarders of different skill levels.
For families and children, Pier Park offers playgrounds and open sports fields. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy shaded trails that wind through the forested areas, providing opportunities for quiet walks and wildlife observation. The park's forest is home to various tree species, including Sequoia, Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, Pacific Madrona, Katsura, and Big Leaf Maple.
In the southwest corner of the park, visitors will find Pier Pool, which operates during the summer season. The pool, dedicated in 1940, adds to the park's recreational value, especially during warmer months.
Pier Park stands as a testament to Portland's commitment to green spaces, offering a blend of natural beauty and recreational facilities that serve the local community and visitors alike.
