Hawthorne Park

Hawthorne Park is a public green space located in the Hawthorne neighborhood of South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The park occupies approximately three-quarters of an acre at the intersection of 12th and Catharine Streets. It was officially dedicated in 2012, making it one of Philadelphia's newer park additions.

The park was developed on the former site of a vacant lot adjacent to the Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza housing development. Its creation was the result of a collaborative effort between community organizations, local residents, and city agencies. The park's design incorporates elements of sustainable urban landscaping, including permeable paving and native plant species.

Hawthorne Park features an open lawn area, providing space for casual recreation and community gatherings. The park is partially elevated, with walls along 12th and Catharine Streets creating a defined edge that separates it from the surrounding urban environment. This design creates a sense of enclosure, giving the park a courtyard-like atmosphere that many residents find appealing for family outings.

It has become a focal point for community activities, hosting events such as outdoor movie screenings, yoga classes, and live performances. The Friends of Hawthorne Park, a volunteer organization, helps maintain the space and organizes various community programs throughout the year.
