About Louis I. Kahn Park in Philadelphia
Kahn Park is a small urban green space located at the corner of 11th and Pine Streets in the Washington Square West neighborhood of Philadelphia. The park occupies less than one acre of land and was created in 1971 on the site of the former Greystone Luxury Hotel after it was demolished.
The park is named in honor of Louis I. Kahn, a renowned Philadelphia architect who lived nearby. It was originally designed with a focus on hardscaping and concrete elements, earning it the nickname "Concrete Park" in its early years.
In 1983, a group called the Friends of Louis I. Kahn Park was formed to improve and maintain the space. They worked to create a greener, more inviting design for the park. Today, Kahn Park features gardens, trees, and a fountain. It provides a peaceful oasis amid the busy city streets.
The park is managed and funded by the Friends of Kahn Park organization and community donors. Volunteers help with planting, cleaning, and maintaining the gardens throughout the year. As one of the few green spaces between Washington and Rittenhouse Squares, Kahn Park has become a popular gathering place for local residents.
