About Harmon Field in Charleston
Harmon Field is a mid-sized park situated on 13 acres of land in Charleston, South Carolina. Established in 1927 with support from the philanthropic Harmon Foundation, it initially served as a segregated facility for African Americans until 1964. The park has a rich history, particularly in relation to youth sports and community engagement.
In 1953, the Cannon Street YMCA established the first black Little League in South Carolina, which used Harmon Field as its home ground. The field gained historical significance in 1955 when the Cannon Street YMCA All-Stars became state champions by forfeit after white teams boycotted rather than integrate. Although invited to the Little League World Series, the team was not allowed to compete.
Today, Harmon Field serves as an active recreation area for the Charleston community. It features multiple sports facilities, including lighted fields for various activities. The park is adjacent to the Arthur W. Christopher Community Center and the Herbert Hasell Pool, further expanding its recreational offerings.
Harmon Field's historical importance is recognized by a state marker located on the President Street side of the park, commemorating its role in the civil rights movement and youth sports history in South Carolina.
