About Brittlebank Park in Charleston
Brittlebank Park is a 10-acre public park located along the Ashley River in Charleston, South Carolina. Situated next to the Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park baseball stadium, it offers visitors scenic views of the river and surrounding marshlands.
The park was created in 1975 and named after Julius Brittlebank, a wealthy Charleston resident who left funds for the creation of public parks upon his death. Prior to its development as a park, the land was used as a landfill and garbage dump from 1954 to 1970.
Brittlebank Park features open green spaces, paved walking paths, and a fishing pier with a boat dock that extends into the Ashley River. The park is known for its native wildflowers and plant species, making it a popular spot for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
The park serves as a venue for various events throughout the year, including concerts, festivals, and sporting tournaments. It is also a favored location for picnics, fishing, and enjoying outdoor activities with family and friends.
Brittlebank Park is managed by the Charleston Parks Conservancy and is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. While it offers tranquility on most days, it can become quite busy during scheduled events.
