About McKinley Park in Tacoma

McKinley Park, located in Tacoma, Washington, is one of the city's oldest parks, established in 1901. Originally named East Park, it was renamed shortly after to honor President William McKinley following his assassination. The park spans approximately 26 acres of green space in the heart of Tacoma, offering a natural retreat for visitors.

The park features a diverse landscape, including four streams and four wetlands. The largest of these wetlands has been enhanced and expanded, and is considered a wetland of local significance by the City of Tacoma. These wetlands play a crucial role in supporting specialized plants, providing refuge for various species of fish, birds, and wildlife, as well as absorbing stormwater and filtering out pollutants.

McKinley Park is characterized by its tree-lined trails that wind through the property, offering visitors peaceful paths for walking and enjoying nature. The park's terrain includes steep hillsides, providing some areas with views of the surrounding city. In the early days of the park, the name "McKinley Park" was even fashioned out of stones on the steep hillside, visible from boats and trains entering the city.

Over the years, McKinley Park has undergone several improvements to enhance visitor experience. In 2005, as part of a Park Improvement Bond program, the park's pathways were improved, and new facilities were added. The park now includes playground equipment, which draws families from the surrounding neighborhood.

It's important to note that while McKinley Park welcomes dogs, it is not an off-leash dog park. Dogs must be kept on leashes in compliance with the McKinley Park Stewardship Plan and the City of Tacoma's Critical Areas Protection Ordinance.

McKinley Park serves as an important green space in Tacoma, offering residents a place to connect with nature, engage in outdoor activities, and enjoy the beauty of one of the city's historic parks.
