About DeForest Park in Long Beach
DeForest Park is a 49.6-acre urban oasis located in North Long Beach, California. The park consists of two distinct areas: a 15-acre developed section with recreational facilities and a 34.91-acre natural area known as the DeForest Wetlands.
The developed portion of the park, acquired in 1976, offers a variety of amenities for community use. This section includes sports facilities, playgrounds, and communal spaces designed to serve the diverse needs of local residents.
The DeForest Wetlands, which opened to the public on June 30, 2018, is a restored natural area that has transformed what was once overgrown with exotic vegetation or completely denuded land. This section now features freshwater wetlands, wildlife habitats, recreational trails, and native plants, while still maintaining its crucial flood control function for the Los Angeles River.
The wetlands area provides a unique opportunity for passive recreation and environmental education. Visitors can enjoy activities such as bird watching, walking, and participating in educational tours and programs. The restoration project has also improved water quality, with 800-1,000 acre-feet per year of neighborhood watershed runoff being filtered before entering the Los Angeles River.
DeForest Park's natural area includes a riparian forest containing cottonwoods, coast live oaks, willows, and some non-native species like pepper trees. The southern end of the park features an open, weedy grassland with wetlands continuing through this area. Despite the presence of some non-native plants, the park hosts a variety of wildlife and wildflowers, making it an interesting destination for nature enthusiasts.
The park is open from dawn to dusk, allowing visitors to enjoy its facilities and natural beauty throughout the day. It serves as an important green space in North Long Beach, providing recreational opportunities and a connection to nature for the local community.
