About Tyrone Carney Park in Oakland
Tyrone Carney Park is a small triangular-shaped park located in the Sobrante Park neighborhood of Oakland, California. The park was constructed in 1968 and named after Tyrone Edward Carney, a Private First-Class United States Marine who died serving his country in Vietnam on June 9, 1968, at the age of 20.
The park has had a complicated history. In the 1980s, it became a center of drug-related activity, which led to the city installing a fence around the park in an attempt to reduce crime. For many years, the park remained closed to the public due to these issues.
In recent years, there have been efforts to revitalize Tyrone Carney Park. The East Oakland Neighborhoods Initiative (EONI) collaborated with the City of Oakland Public Works to develop plans for improving the park. In 2017, community meetings resulted in a grant proposal for a complete renovation of the park.
As of 2023, the park was classified in the City's Zoning Maps as being in the Open Space Zone with a subclassification of Urban Active Mini Park. The planned improvements for the park include new play equipment, a memorial to Tyrone Carney, a plaza with ornamental paving, walking paths, a lawn area, and various other features.
The renovation project is scheduled to be completed in phases, with construction beginning in Winter 2024-2025 and a planned re-dedication in late Summer or early Fall 2025.
