About A.D. Doug Barnes Park in Miami
A.D. (Doug) Barnes Park is a 65-acre green space nestled in one of Miami's busiest areas. Established in 1977, the park was named after the first Director of the Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation Department.
The park features a diverse range of natural habitats, including one of the few remaining Pine Rocklands in Miami-Dade County. This unique ecosystem spans approximately 15 acres within the park and is home to various native plant and animal species. The Audubon Society has recognized A.D. Barnes Park as one of the best birdwatching locations in Miami, particularly during fall and spring migration periods.
At the heart of the park lies the Sense of Wonder Nature Center, which offers educational programs and guided eco-adventure tours. Visitors can explore the center's reptile collection and learn about the local wildlife. The nature center also serves as a starting point for the park's network of hiking trails that wind through the pine rockland habitat.
For those seeking recreational activities, the park provides a 25-meter heated swimming pool with six lanes. The pool area offers swim classes for children and water exercise programs for seniors. Additionally, the park includes basketball courts, picnic shelters, and a playground for families to enjoy.
A.D. Barnes Park also features a Leisure Access Camp, which includes two cabins set within the pine rockland forest. These facilities are available for weekend and overnight stays, primarily serving groups and organizations. The campground area is equipped with a kitchen and dining facilities, making it suitable for special events and gatherings.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset, providing a natural oasis for Miami residents and visitors alike to connect with nature, engage in outdoor activities, and learn about the local ecosystem.
