About Bowler Park in Boise
Bowler Park is a 24.62-acre public park located in Southeast Boise, Idaho, near the Surprise Valley neighborhood. Acquired by the City of Boise in 1995 from Beth and Bruce Bowler, the park was officially opened to the public on July 13, 2021. The park's design incorporates both developed recreational areas and preserved natural spaces, reflecting the city's commitment to balancing urban amenities with environmental conservation.
The park features six acres dedicated to recreational facilities and community gathering spaces, while the remaining 19 acres have been intentionally left in their natural state to preserve the local ecosystem. This approach aligns with Boise's participation in the America The Beautiful Campaign, which aims to conserve and restore the country's lands, waters, and wildlife.
Bowler Park is named after Bruce Bowler, an Idaho conservationist known for his efforts to preserve the state's wild spaces. His work included protecting areas against mining in the White Cloud Mountains, preventing dam construction on the Snake River, and contributing to the creation of the 2.3 million-acre River of No Return Wilderness bill.
The park's location off South Surprise Way, below the cliffs of the Columbia Village neighborhood, provides visitors with scenic views of the surrounding landscape. It serves as a model for future park development in Boise, supporting the city's goal of ensuring every child has a 10-minute walk to a park.
